Capability Maturity Model 2 [CMM/CMMI]
written by gunther gerlach-2009
As I mentioned earlier, Capability Maturity Model “CMMI” is a collection of best practices for the development and maintenance of both products and services. It is the application of process management and quality improvement concepts to software development and maintenance and, designed to guide in selecting improvement strategies by determining current maturity of the software process.
The Five Levels of CMMI
CMMI Level 2 – Key Process Areas
CMMI Level 1-Initial: processes are unpredictable and poorly controlled
CMMI Level 2-Repeatable: Can repeat previously mastered tasks
CMMI Level 3-Defined: Process characterized and fairly well understood
CMMI Level 4-Managed: Process measured and controlled
CMMI Level 5-Optimizing: Focus on process improvement
What does it cost to get to a Mature Project Management Organization (CMM Level 2)?
Obviously, once an organization achieves Project Maturity (Level 2), the cost savings are dramatic
What does it cost and is it worth it to get there? Well, cost depends on several factors:
Ø Initial Project Management Maturity of the Organization
Ø Management Commitment and Support
Ø Resources/Funding, Leadership
Ø Methodology, Processes and Experience of PM Implementers
Getting to Level 2 can take 6 months or more. The longer it takes, the more it costs
Ø Management Commitment and Support are keys to:
Ø Reducing Time and Cost (Committing Funding & Resources)
Ø Increasing Return on Investment
